Honeybee vax company moves to Athens

A biotech company has moved to Athens to begin marketing a vaccine designed to target a disease affecting bee colonies across the globe.

Dalan Animal Health makes vaccines to treat insect diseases, an important research area since much of the world’s food supply depends on pollinated crops. The company plans to expand product development to other honeybee diseases and underserved animal populations, like shrimp, mealworms, and grasshoppers used in feed and food production.

Located in the University of Georgia’s Innovation Hub in downtown Athens, Dalan expects to create 20 new jobs in the Athens area over the next five years. In a statement, ACC Mayor Kelly Girtz said he was “proud to welcome Dalan Animal Health to Athens-Clarke County."
