Board of Elections sets March date for special election to replace Parker

Online Athens

Athens-Clarke County voters will head to the polls in March to decide who will fill the seat vacated by former District 2 Commissioner Mariah Parker.

After an at times contentious meeting, the board voted in a three to two decision at a special called meeting Tuesday evening.

Both ACC Mayor Kelly Girtz and Commissioners had requested the March date for the Special Election instead of in November with the midterms.

Elections staff told officials at a meeting last week that, while holding the special election concurrently with November’s general election was possible, it could cause significant problems and require extra voting machines, staff, and expense.

The decision means that voters in the new district 2 will vote for their commissioner.
