COVID-19 and monkeypox cases are declining in Georgia - for now

The Georgia Department of Public Health reports cases of COVID-19 and monkeypox continue to decline in Georgia.

COVID cases in the state are down about 80% since mid-August. Hospitalizations are down 89% since the Omicron variant hit its peak last winter, while the number of deaths from the virus in Georgia has fallen to about 100 per week.

However, three new omicron subvariants are starting to show up in Georgia and around the country. Together, they account for about 23% of the current caseload in Georgia.

Monkeypox cases have been identified in 64 counties in the state with 85% of those cases concentrated in metro Atlanta and 98% of the cases among men.
