Qualifying in District 2 seat to begin next week

As Georgia settles down after a contentious runoff election, elections officials in Clarke County are preparing for a March special election to fill a vacant seat on the Athens-Clarke County Commission.

The District 2 seat, which will represent a large swath of in-town Athens, was vacated by Mariah Parker this year. The district, as redrawn by state legislators, includes neighborhoods like Cobbham, Boulevard, and Normaltown, as well as neighborhoods north and east of downtown.

According to the Clarke Board of Elections, candidates interested in running for the District 2 seat in the March 21 special election can begin qualifying on Monday, December 19 at 9 am. Qualifying ends on Wednesday, December 21.

If a runoff is necessary, it will be held Tuesday, April 18th. The qualifying fee to become an ACC Commissioner is $450.
