After the fall of an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) ordinance designed to alleviate the county’s housing shortage, Athens-Clarke County Commissioners plan to reassess housing reform over the next few months.
Last year, an ADU ordinance which would have allowed homeowners to build and rent out guesthouses was voted down 5-4 by commissioners. While most commissioners seemed to support some version of an ADU ordinance, the proposal failed after commissioners couldn’t agree on the number of allowed bedrooms.
Mayor Kelly Girtz told WUGA earlier this week that he hopes commissioners will reassess ADU’s as a possible option in combating the county’s housing crunch.
Girtz added that commissioners are already scheduled to address countywide housing regulations in the coming months.
While currently undecided, ADUs are not the only way commissioners are working on increasing the county’s housing stock. Commissioners passed a 78.4-acre housing and commercial development earlier this month.
