Gas prices rise in Athens

Higher demand and higher crude prices are pushing gas prices up across the nation.

Triple A says warmer temperatures mean more people getting outside and driving to destinations.

The average price in metro Athens has risen 10 cents a gallon over the past month, now averaging $3.17 a gallon. But it’s still lower than a year ago when gas averaged $3.87 a gallon.

And the average in the Athens area is lower than the statewide average by five cents a gallon and far below the national average of $3.50 a gallon.

For much of the past year, Georgia had the cheapest gas in the nation…but that is no longer the case. Mississippi now has the cheapest gas. But California remains the most expensive state with some areas approaching six dollars a gallon.
