Crime is down in Athens overall, but not in all categories. According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Transparency Hub, the number reported crimes in Clarke County has ranged from around 1,600 to a high of 2,500 in 2018.

But that downward trend isn’t seen in every category, particularly when it comes to gangs and gun violence. ACCPD Chief Jerry Saulters discussed those topics and other challenges facing the department.
