Some homeowners may see increased property taxes pending approval of the Clarke County School District’s 2024 budget.
Board of Education members are scheduled to hold a final vote on their $214 million spending plan on Thursday. The proposed budget maintains last year’s millage rate -- which could lead some homeowners to pay increased property taxes as the county’s property values surge.
In the past year, property values in Athens-Clarke County rose by 14%. Nearly all of that increase -- 13.67% -- is due to property value reassessment.
That increase and the total number of property taxes accounts for about 57% of the district’s budget, while state funding accounts for an additional 38%. If passed, the budget allots $51.9 million to the county’s reserve.
The board will hold a final public hearing at 5:00 on Thursday, right before holding their final vote on the budget.
