Clarke County Schools to vote on FY24 budget

Clarke County School District

After several public hearings, the Clarke County School District plans to finalize their 2024 budget at tonight’s meeting.

The tentative budget maintains last year’s millage rate at 18.8 mils -- which may lead some homeowners to pay increased property taxes as the county’s property values surge.

The Board plans to spend $214 million over the course of FY 2024. Some of that money will go to increasing CCSD employee salaries, according to Tim Denson, District 5’s BOE member.

In the past year, property values in Athens-Clarke County rose by 14%. Nearly all of that increase -- 13.67% -- is due to property value reassessment.

The millage rate makes up 57% of the district’s budget, while state funding accounts for an additional 38%. If passed, the budget allocates a sizable $51.9 million to the county’s reserve.

The Board of Education is holding their last public hearing tonight at 5:00 PM, before voting on the budget.

As CCSD finalizes their budget, the ACC commission remains embroiled in debate over the county’s 2024 budget. The commission plans to hold a final vote -- which will likely include a millage rate reduction -- at their Tuesday meeting.
