New Report Shows Nation in Need of Additional Funding for Public Health System

A new report shows more investment is needed to support the nation’s public health. Research by the Trust for America’s Health, or TFAH, shows the nation’s public health system is ill-equipped to protect citizens’ health and prepare for future emergencies.

Lieberman says lack of funding has also led to many employees leaving the field. In addition, the covid-19 emergency funding did not address structural deficits in the public health system. TFAH says 60% of the U.S. population has at least one chronic disease, such as obesity, diabetes, or heart disease. The organization says the federal government can strengthen emergency preparedness by providing the CDC with annual funding of at least $11.5 billion in FY 2024. Funding for the CDC was just over nine billion in 2023.

She does say Georgia is making an effort at the state level, by increasing the level of spending in the public health system for the past two years.
