The Athens Music Walk of Fame Committee has announced five inductees for 2023;
Monroe Bowers "Pink" Morton, owner of downtown Athens' Morton Theatre, Normaltown Flyers, an Athens band who have been jamming in local venues since 1979 and Jackie Payne, an Athens native Blues singer. Also named were Broadway star and University of Georgia graduate Calvin Orlando Smith, and WUOG, UGA's alternative college radio station.
The walk, created in 2020, passes several renowned music venues in western downtown, including the Morton theater, 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre. Inductees are honored with Bronze plaques designed by local artist Allen Sutton, which will be installed in the sidewalk this summer to commemorate these artists and community members who have contributed to Athens’ musical legacy.
