CCSD holds final budget hearings

Nicole Jordan

The Clarke County Board of Education will hold the first of two hearings on a possible lowering of the millage rate today at 6 p.m.

The millage rate is one of two major factors that control how much a property owner pays in property taxes. The other major factor is the property’s value.

In their tentative 2024 budget, school district officials propose keeping the millage rate the same, meaning that many homeowners will see tax increases.

District 5 board member Tim Denson is seeking a modest reduction, citing the district’s healthy cash reserves.

“There was a decent amount that was going back into our general funds, some unallocated funds, that showed that we could definitely have a small pullback that would not negatively affect the school district at all,” Denson said.

There will be a second hearing on the matter tomorrow at 6 p.m., after which the board is expected to vote on the issue.
