Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter celebrate their 77th wedding anniversary this Friday in their South Georgia home, continuing their title as the longest-married presidential couple while facing significant health challenges.
The 39th president is 98 and has been in home hospice care since February after a few trips to the hospital in recent years. Earlier this year, the family announced Mrs. Carter, 95, had been diagnosed with dementia.
What has been described as the couple’s “full partnership” began in the Carter family farm business and remained strong throughout Carter’s political career, and decades of joint global humanitarian work following. In 2019, Carter became the oldest living former president in U.S. history at 94 years old.
The couple continues to enjoy time with each other and frequent visits from family and friends at their ranch-style house in Plains, Georgia, which has been their permanent residence since 1961.
