Two Athens-Clarke County Schools to be renamed in November

Clarke County School District

Earlier this year, the Athens-Clarke County School Board approved the renaming of two elementary schools to honor some of the first African-American teachers in the Clarke County School District. They have announced the renaming ceremonies for later this fall.

On Nov. 3. Alps Road Elementary will become Bettye Henderson Holston Elementary while Chase Street Elementary will become Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary.

The Clarke County Board of Education approved the renaming of the elementary schools back in February to honor the district’s first African-American teachers assigned to predominately white schools in the 1960s.

Burks and Holston were the first African-American teachers assigned to Chase Street and Alps Road under a federally approved plan to integrate the district in August 1966.
