Georgia U.S. attorney Edward J. Tarver dies at 64

Edward J. Tarver, the first Black U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, passed away on Friday. Tarver died at the age of 64 after developing complications from a December surgery.

Before his appointment to federal court in 2009, Tarver served as a state senator for Georgia’s 22nd district and as a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1991 and practiced law in Augusta. He served on multiple community boards in the community after his tenure as U.S. attorney. Tarver is survived by his wife and four children.
