Suspect in custody as body found in Oglethorpe County identified

WARREN SUMMERS

The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been investigating a death in Oglethorpe County near the Clarke County line. Medical and dental records have now identified the victim as 69-year-old David John Stewart of Double Bridges Road.

Early in the morning on February 25, friends of the victim entered his home in Winterville looking for Stewart. When they didn’t find him, they went searching for Stewart in the woods behind his house. According to the incident report from the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office, the body, which had been there quite a while, was found partially concealed by tree branches. The case was referred to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation which determined there had been foul play.

In a statement posted on Facebook Monday, the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s office says a person of interest has been detained in another state. They assured the public that there are not any ongoing threats to the community related to this case. However, the investigation is ongoing. They are encouraging anyone who either may have had any contact with Mr. Stewart or may have been by his house on Double Bridges Road and noticed anything unusual or noteworthy to contact Detective Adam Hunter by calling 706-743-8101 ext 1714 or through email at jhunter@oglethorpesheriff.org.
