The Internal Revenue Service has granted a two-week extension for tax filing in several states affected by Hurricane Helene, including Georgia.

The extension applies to all 159 Georgia counties declared disaster areas by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It also includes all of Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina, as well as parts of Tennessee and Virginia.

Georgians now have until May 1 to file their taxes.

Helene, a Category 4 hurricane, swept across Georgia in late September, bringing severe winds, heavy rain, and widespread flooding. Though it veered slightly off its predicted path, it passed through Middle Georgia and had a significant impact on the Augusta area.

The storm caused a total of 220 deaths, including 37 in Georgia.
