The average price of gas in the greater Athens area has declined by about five cents over the past week, currently sitting at $2.98 per gallon.
That’s roughly unchanged from this time last month, but prices are down more than 40 cents compared to the same time last year.
Georgia’s statewide average is 22 cents cheaper than the national average of $3.15 per gallon. California continues to have the highest average gas price in the nation at $4.84 per gallon.
According to AAA, softer demand is contributing to a downward trend in gas prices, with crude oil prices at their lowest in several years.
