CARE USA, the humanitarian organization headquartered in Atlanta, is among the organizations being affected by a reduction in federal funding through USAID.
About $165 million in CARE’s USAID grant has been cut. The AJC reports that overall, the Trump administration has claimed nearly $15 billion in savings from cuts to grants nationwide.
CARE says it has laid off hundreds of employees across the nation and thousands abroad following the cuts. It’s estimated that $353 million was cut from USAID grants that had been awarded to CARE and other organizations in Georgia.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that foreign assistance programs are being reoriented to align directly with what’s best for the United States and its citizens.
