The Athens Pride and Queer Collective hosted their 27th annual Pride this past weekend on June 7th, but this time it was bigger than ever.
Pride Month kicked off at the start of June and the city of Athens celebrated with festivities throughout the day on Saturday. This year's celebration included the combination of both the parade, normally held in June, and the festival, which is held in September.
Downtown Athens sparked to life with colors of the rainbow. Local vendors sold plushies, jewelry and much more. Other vendors pushed the importance of resources for members of the LGBTQ+ community, ranging from addiction recovery to STD health to mental wellbeing.
The parade began at 5 pm, with walking groups from The Boybutantes to the Banyan Tree to Oconee Street United Methodist Church. The celebration welcomed those from all walks of life.
Athens Pride and Queer collective board member Melissa Williamson talks about what working with Pride means to her, “I am proud to be able to celebrate and participate and be a part of this.” She goes on to mention the significance of celebrating Pride, “I think that in our current political climate there is nothing more important.”
While Pridefest is already over, the Athens Pride and Queer Collective hosts events year round. From Queer Prom to Transgender Surgery Scholarships, there’s something for everyone.
