Barrow County Schools announced Saturday that it has been awarded $1 million in federal grant money. The funds will cover costs related to the aftermath of the mass shooting that took place at Apalachee High School last September.
The school system says the money will come from the US Department of Education’s School Emergency Response to Violence program, known as Project SERV. The program funds short-term services for schools and universities where violent or traumatic events have occurred.
Barrow County Schools plans to use the money to reimburse expenses taken on after a high school student allegedly shot and killed four people. The system says it has already spent over $4 million on rented classroom space, transportation, substitute teachers, and administrative expenses.
