Second federal and state grant will allow Firefly Trail expansion to move forward

A second federal and state grant has been awarded to help continue paving of the Firefly Trail. The $2.9 million grant will assist in the construction of a 4.5 mile section from Maxeys to the Greene County through a section of unincorporated Oglethorpe County.

Firefly Trail Inc. recently announced it had received at $2.7 million dollar grant to build the trail from Union Point in Greene County to the Oglethorpe County line. The proposed trail would run 39 miles from downtown Athens to downtown Union Point and will be constructed mostly along a closed railroad line.

Additionally, Athens-Clarke County is in the process of completing the trail between Hancock Road and Winterville.
