An investigation is underway after one inmate died on Tuesday and two others were found unresponsive at the Athens-Clarke County Jail. A release from the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office states that on Tuesday, July 8, jail staff discovered a 31-year-old African American male with an unknown medical issue inside one of the housing units. Despite life-saving measures by staff, Emergency Medical Services and the ACC Fire Department, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Following agency protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

Around 5 pm the same day, a 28-year-old white male was found unresponsive with an unknown medical issue inside one of the housing units. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Shortly after that incident, at approximately 5:26 pm, a 36-year-old African American male was found in a separate cell, also unresponsive. He was taken to an area hospital for medical evaluation. Both individuals are being evaluation for suspected drug overdoses after deputies found suspected drugs inside the housing unit.

Jail personnel began life-saving measures and medical staff were notified in all cases.
