Operation Southern Slow Down, the campaign to stop speeding in five southern states, started Monday and will continue until Sunday, July 20th.
Over the week of July 14th-July 20th this year, the campaign will have increased patrols among the five states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee. Operation Southern Slow Down was started in 2017 to reduce car accidents and save lives.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,604 people were killed in car accidents involving speeding in the five states in 2023, showing a 13% increase from the 1,418 deaths involving speeding in 2019. During the operation last July, over 12,000 people were given citations for speeding, along with about 450 arrests for DUIs just in the state of Georgia.
In addition to “Operation Southern Slow Down,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also runs their campaign, “Speeding Slows You Down,” from July 7th-July 31st.
There will be increased law enforcement across the state of Georgia in July, and speeders can expect to be ticketed if pulled over.
