Two fires cause damage; no injuries reported

A fire in Jackson County destroyed a home in Nicholson on Tuesday. A passing motorist stopped and assisted a wheelchair-bound resident get out of the home, and no one was injured. That fire is still under investigation.

Additionally, the Athens-Clarke County Fire Marshal’s Office says a fire that heavily damaged some apartments off Riverbend Parkway was accidental and was due to outdoor cooking equipment. The fire at the Enclave 425 Apartment was reported at about 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, with firefighters reporting heavy fire conditions on the second floor. No one was injured. The complex is used for student housing, with many units unoccupied prior to the expected return of students next week.
