President Trump has endorsed Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones is his race for the office of Georgia governor.
Jones spent years cultivating the president’s support, and the endorsement seemed inevitable after U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, his biggest potential rival for a Trump blessing, opted out of the race.
The AJC calls it a setback for Jones’ chief rival, Attorney General Chris Carr, who has made four visits to the White House since Trump’s return but also notes Carr handily defeated a Trump-backed challenger for the AG’s office in 2022. Carr has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Jones of campaign finance violations.
Following the 2020 election, Jones was among those pressing for a special legislative session and supported lawsuits aimed at reversing Joe Biden’s victory. A special grand jury recommended Jones be indicted as part of the Fulton County election-interference probe but a special prosecutor and a judge declined to allow the case.
