Athens Film Festival features homegrown films, nurtures creative community

Athens Film Festival

The 2nd annual Athens Film Festival ended Sunday. Over the weekend, filmmakers and film enthusiasts came to Athens' local theatres to enjoy screenings of indie projects, including short films and animations.

Festival Producer, Allison Griffin, said, "We actually have two full length features in this year’s film festival that were shot in Athens," speaking about Withdrawal, directed by Athens-native Aaron Strand and American Deadbolt, directed by Bryan Redding.

The festival also supported networking efforts by hosting mixers downtown. Chloe Garza, a recent transplant from California, she says she was able to begin building a community of her own during the festival. “I’ve met so many great people who are so excited about being in the industry and being together with artists and people who love film,” she said.

Over 100 submissions were screened over the four day festival in downtown Athens.

Alexzundra Tillman is a part-time reporter and producer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in Film and Television studies at UGA and hopes to work at the cross section of these two fields in the future.
