US court to hold hearing for release of journalist arrested at Dekalb County protest

Mario Guevara, a reporter for Mundo Hispanico, talks on the phone with an immigration rights group as he flips through his federal immigration judgement in his home Thursday, July 5, 2012, in Lilburn, Ga. The reporter for Georgia's largest Spanish-language newspaper who frequently writes about immigration issues has recently found himself caught up in his own immigration drama. When an immigration judge last month denied Guevara's application for asylum and ordered him and his family to leave the country within 60 days, his world was turned upside down. A US Court will hold a hearing for a journalist detained at a Dekalb County protest seeking his immediate release.

On Wednesday, a hearing will be held for Mario Guevara, a journalist who was detained at a “No Kings” protest in Dekalb County in June. The hearing will be held in Brunswick at 11 a.m.

Guevara is a 47-year-old man who is legally authorized to work and live in the country. He is currently being held in custody at the Folkston ICE Detention Center in Southeastern Georgia. An immigration judge granted Guevara bond in July. The federal government filed an emergency motion reversing the previous bond order.

The government says that Guevara’s recording of law enforcement activities and reporting to the public present a danger to the community. All pending criminal charges against Guevara have been dismissed.
