School security was among the topics discussed at a Tuesday meeting of the Barrow County School Board. Student Isabel Trejo was in class during the Apalachee High School shooting last September 4. She addressed the board.
“I've struggled to accept the reality of what I and so many others experienced on that day,” Trejo said. “On September 4th I was put into a life-or-death situation, and it seemed like there was no escape.
Never will I forget the sounds of gunshots witnessing injured people get wheeled out on stretchers and the fear I felt as I cowered in a corner a recycling bin held over my head to protect my head and chest in case the shooter entered my open classroom door never will I forget seeing the blood on floors and on the hands of my peers. Never will I forget seeing my classmates shove desks towards the door to barricade it.
Trejo suggested requiring classroom doors to be locked at all times, as well as implementing a clear bag policy, and using AI weapons detectors.
