Barrow County schools have implemented a new initiative as the one-year anniversary of the Apalachee High School shooting approaches.

The Barrow County School System has partnered with The Cook Center for Human Connection. This mental health advocacy group will be providing parents and caregivers with free virtual coaching and online courses that are meant to help them address topics like bullying and self-harm with the children in their care. The courses will be available for the entire month of September.

Since the shooting at Apalachee High School on September 4th, 2024, the school district has been working to hire extra resource officers. However, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners withdrew financial support for the additional officers weeks before the end of summer. The school board has been working to expand their budget to manage the $2 million cost.
