The Middle Oconee River flows north to south through Clarke County, where it’s crossed by the 10 Loop and Atlanta Highway. The Oconee River Land Trust is a Northeast Georgia nonprofit that seeks to conserve undeveloped natural areas, and it recently launched a new campaign to conserve land around this river.

Dan Crescenzo is the organization’s Executive Director, and he met WUGA’s Emma Auer on the bank of the Middle Oconee to discuss this waterway—and why he and his colleagues are seeking to conserve it.

Emma Auer is an award-winning reporter who joined WUGA as a full-time producer in 2024. She is also a graduate student in UGA's Romance Languages Department, studying French and Spanish. She covers the breadth of Northeast Georgia stories, from Athens City Hall to Winterville farmers' markets. Emma's work has also been heard on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
