After Oconee County most recent Board of Education meeting, the board reached a decision for the next Superintendent of Oconee County schools.

The Board of Education unanimously approved for Dr. Melissa Butler to serve as the next Superintendent for schools in Oconee County. She’ll be sworn in on Monday, October 6, at the Board of Education work session and begins her new role on Tuesday, October 14.

Butler currently serves as Deputy/Assistant Superintendent in Catoosa County. She has been a part of Catoosa County’s school district since 2007 and taught English Language Arts. Butler then became Assistant Principal and Principal of Heritage Middle School between 2007-2022.

Heritage Middle School became the first middle school in Georgia to be recognized as a Model PLC (Professional Learning Communities) school under Butler’s leadership. She earned the Rebecca Defour national leadership award.

“We are confident that her experience and passion will build upon our strong foundation. We look forward to the great work she will do for our students, staff, and community,” Board Chair Michael Ransom said.
