State Representative Marcus Wiedower has announced that he will step down from his role. Wiedower, a Republican, has represented Oconee and Clarke Counties in the state legislature since 2019.

In a statement made Tuesday morning, Wiedower said he will step away from the state government to focus on his role at a real estate development company, where he is vice president of external affairs.

Wiedower has served as chairman of a subcommittee on appropriations and was also a member of the committee on higher education. He sponsored legislation to legalize sports betting as well as bolster rights for caregivers of foster children.

A special election will be held to fill Wiedower’s seat in December.
