Local lawyer and former president of the Clarke County Board of Education Ed Tolley announced his candidacy for the Athens-Clarke County Commission District 7 seat last Monday.
Tolley said in a press release that his campaign will focus on “solutions-driven representation” for the district that covers the Timothy Road and Beechwood Hills neighborhoods. His website cites concerns for the neighborhood’s traffic safety, along with intent to support community policing, first responders, and sustainable growth of affordable housing and infrastructure improvements in the area.
“Athens has given me so much throughout my life and career. Now it’s my turn to give back in a new way — by serving District 7 with honesty, accountability, and respect. Together, we can keep our neighborhoods safe, ensure Athens remains a livable community for every generation, and work to unite people around shared goals rather than divisions,” Tolley said in a statement released with the announcement.
A lifelong resident of Athens and a University of Georgia graduate, Tolley has practiced in Athens for more than 50 years as a founding partner of Cook & Tolley, LLP. In addition to his time on Clarke County’s BOE, he served as chair of the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission and is a retired officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.
The election for odd numbered Commission seats and the mayor’s office will take place in May 2026.
