Dexter Fisher is Athens-Clarke County’s District 5 commissioner. Last Friday, Fisher announced that he will run for mayor of Athens-Clarke County in the next election.
Fisher says his campaign will focus on his extensive history of community service and civic engagement. His former professional roles include Director of Facilities Management at the University of Georgia and Clarke County School District’s Chief of District Services.
Fisher plans to emphasize unity during his campaign, “This campaign is going to be about uniting our community, about having partnerships with everybody within our community, and [I’m] hoping to move our community forward where everybody can feel like they’re part of what we’re trying to do as a government. So, I want to be a uniter, not a divider.”
He has served in several local organizations such as the Athens Piedmont Hospital Board, a nonprofit called the Athens Area Community Foundation, and the Athens Rotary Club, which promotes community engagement.
Fisher has stated that he plans to tackle issues such as gang violence, homelessness, and the lack of affordable housing in Athens-Clarke County. He also claims that one of his primary goals is to increase efforts towards youth development.
The next election for Athens-Clarke County mayor will take place in May 2026.
