Georgia Gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms visited Athens today for a meet and greet with residents.
The former Atlanta mayor, a Democrat, met with about 20 people in downtown Athens Thursday afternoon. She said during a short speech that she would prioritize increasing housing and healthcare affordability, as well as eliminating income tax for teachers.
She said that if elected, she envisions the state government collaborating with communities like Athens to solve the homelessness crisis.
“My biggest concern even when I served as Mayor of Atlanta was just shifting the homeless population from community to community without addressing the underlying issues,” Lance Bottoms said, “The state can and should be a tremendous partner in this effort, from helping to make sure the wraparound services are available to even addressing the funding gaps that may exist.”
Lance Bottoms will face six other candidates in the Democratic primary on May 19th.
