Georgia is among the states with the most racial equality in education.
New research from the personal finance website WalletHub shows smaller gaps in attainment between Black and white students in Georgia.
Writer and analyst Chip Lupo says Georgia does well in several areas, including high school graduation rates, the number of adults with at least a high school diploma, and the share of adults with a college degree.
“Georgia is a very diverse state when it comes to Black and white Americans,” according to Lupo. “Which is key because what we found interesting is that some of the states that perform best, as in having the least gaps in attainment are some of the states that are not as diverse.”
The state does need improvement when it comes to gaps in test scores.
The study showed that racial funding gaps remain in spite of decades of school finance reforms, with districts serving fewer Black and Hispanic students still receiving about $900 to $1,000 more per student on average. Authors said funding gaps can contribute to lower-quality education, shaping not only future earning potential but also long-term career opportunities.
