Athens voters turn out for runoff elections

Nicole Jordan

Athens residents are heading to the polls today to vote in the local nonpartisan and general primary runoff elections.

Today is the last day for voters to cast their ballots in the runoffs.

Early voting took place last week. According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, almost 9,000 voters in Clarke County took advantage of early voting. That’s about 13% turnout for Clarke County so far. The statewide voter turnout for this election is less than 7% so far.

Paul Floyd voted this morning at Clarke Central High School.

“I’ve got to do my civic duty,” Floyd said. “Just wanted to vote for all the candidates.”

All Athens voters will have the chance to cast ballots in the nonpartisan runoff for Athens-Clarke County mayor. Voters in Athens-Clarke County Districts 5 and 9 will also vote for commissioners.

Statewide runoff elections will vary between the Democratic and Republican ballots. The Republican ballot includes races for the party nomination for governor and U.S. Senate. Composite sample ballots can be found on the Athens-Clarke County Elections Department website.

Voters can visit the Georgia My Voter Page to find their polling place. All polling locations will be open until 7 p.m.

All registered voters are eligible to vote in the runoffs, regardless of whether they voted in the May 19 general primary and nonpartisan election.

Athens voters will return to the polls in November for the national midterm elections.
