The blue and red flag, with the Juneteenth date of Independence, was raised into the air last June by the youth who attended last year's Juneteenth ceremony.

There will be two Juneteenth events held over the weekend.

On Friday, June 19th, Historic Athens, in partnership with the city, will host their "Athens Juneteenth Celebration" in downtown Athens from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The following day, Saturday, June 20th, Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement will host their "Classic City Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival" at the Georgia Square Mall from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Both events are free to the public.

The president of the AADM has criticized Historic Athens for utilizing similar programming as their own from previous years. The 2024 and 2025 Juneteenth Festivals were hosted by the AADM in partnership with Athens-Clarke County.

Before that, in 2023, Family Connection/Communities in Schools received support from the county to host their Juneteenth festival, which they called “19th is the new 4th” at the Rolling Ridge Apartment complex.

This year, Historic Athens received the backing, and it will be their first time hosting the event.
