A public input meeting on the design of Athens’ new Judicial Center will take place next Tuesday, June 30 from 4:00-7:30 P.M. at the center’s selected location, 120 W. Dougherty Street (within the Dougherty Street Government Building Auditorium).
Residents can drop in at any time to share input on the design of the new facility with Athens-Clarke County Government officials. Feedback is requested on the exterior appearance of the building gathering spaces, such as lobbies, entry areas, and other spaces used by the public.
The Mayor and Commission voted to approve 120 W. Dougherty Street as the site for the new Judicial Center at a regular session meeting on June 2. The site is owned by ACCGov and is the current site of the building that houses the Building Inspections & Permits Department, Planning Department, and some Transportation and Public Works Department staff.
Voters approved the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2020 program that included some funding for the construction of a new Judicial Center, which is planned to eventually house all of the judicial functions.
The 218,215 square foot building and related space for the new Judicial Center has an estimated budget of $225 million. The current tentative timeline calls for planning and design over the next 18 months with construction to begin by early 2028 and completion of the Judicial Center by 2030.
