UGA’s provost becomes Clemson University’s new president

Another UGA provost has been tapped to become the head of a University

The University of Georgia bids farewell and congratulations to its Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, Dr. Benjamin Ayers.

Dr. Ayers has accepted the role of president of Clemson University and will begin in his position there on August 1st with a five-year contract. Dr. Ayers is the third provost under UGA’s President, Jere Morehead, to go on to become the head of another University.

Dr. Ayers has been with UGA since 1996 when he joined as an Assistant Professor. Over the course of 30 years, Ayers has risen through the academic ranks to become a Professor, the Director of UGA’s School of Accounting, the Dean of the Terry College of Business, the University's Provost and Senior VP of Academic Affairs.

UGA President, Morehead, extended his gratitude to Dr. Ayers for his consistent and outstanding leadership. Morehead also said that he will be announcing who will take up Dr. Ayers responsibilities in the interim soon, and that the national search for a permanent replacement will follow in the coming weeks.

Alexzundra Tillman is a part-time reporter and producer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in Film and Television studies at UGA and hopes to work at the cross section of these two fields in the future.
