A 44-year-old Athens man remains in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon outside a homeless services center, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the Homeless Day Service Center on North Avenue after an employee reported a man yelling outside the entrance while holding two knives. The man, identified as John Weeks of Athens, allegedly continued shouting at the employee, who then sought assistance from an Athens-Clarke County police officer working off-duty at the facility.

Additional officers responded and repeatedly ordered Weeks to drop the knives, investigators said. When Weeks refused and began moving toward officers, one officer fired, striking him.

Weeks was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation. Once completed, the case will be submitted to the Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
