A Commerce man wounded in an officer-involved shooting has died from his injuries, after spending several days in the hospital. According to a release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, on Sunday, July 26, 22-year-old Levi Long was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
On Thursday, July 16, officers from the Commerce Police Department were called to the scene of a domestic dispute at a home on Forest Avenue. The 911 caller said Long kicked in the door and threatened residents in the home before fleeing the scene.
At around 6:45 p.m., officers found Long at a home on Orchard Drive. He was armed with a screwdriver and moved toward them. Police say Long ignored verbal commands to slow down and stop. He charged the officers, holding the screwdriver in an aggressive manner. Two officers shot at him, striking Long several times. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Long's body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be conducted.
