An Athens special election has been canceled due to a lack of opposition. Candidate Johnelle Simpson will take over the District 8 seat on the Clarke County School Board in January.

The special election scheduled to fill that vacancy has been canceled. According to a notice from the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, the race to fill the unexpired term of Nicole Hull, who resigned in June, will no longer appear on the November 3, 2026, ballot since Simpson has qualified for the office and is running unopposed.

The board stated that the unopposed candidate shall be deemed to have voted for himself.

The District 8 term expires December 31, 2028.
