The Clarke County Board of Education appointed Johnelle Simpson II to fill the remainder of the District 8 seat vacated by Nicole Hull, whose resignation takes effect June 30.
The appointment was made during the board’s June 11 meeting after members reviewed applications and heard presentations from three qualified District 8 residents. Simpson will serve until the term expires on Dec. 31, 2026. A special election for the seat is scheduled for Nov. 3, as required by state law.
Thursday’s meeting also marked Hull’s final scheduled board meeting.
In other action, Board President Dr. Mumbi Anderson announced she was stepping down from the leadership role effective immediately, though she will continue serving as the District 6 representative.
The board elected District 9 representative Mark Evans as its new president, replacing Anderson. Evans, who has served as vice president since January 2024, is currently serving his first term and was recently re-elected to a second term beginning in 2027.
