The search for the next University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor is coming to an end.
The USG announced Wednesday that Thomas A. Fanning has been named the sole finalist for the USG Chancellor role.
Fanning will take over for Sonny Perdue who has served as USG Chancellor since 2022. Perdue announced his retirement in April.
A Georgia Tech alum, Fanning spent 13 years in charge of Southern Company before retiring in 2023. He spent more than four decades with the company. Fanning has been involved with his alma mater for decades and in 2023 had Georgia Tech’s new student-athlete performance center named after him.
USG Board of Regents Chair David B. Dove said Fanning “stood out immediately” among the many candidates in the nationwide search.
The board will take action at a future meeting, no sooner than 14 days from them naming Fanning a finalist.
