AADM President Says Progress Needed on Civilian Oversight Committee

ACC Government

Mokah-Jasmine Johnson is president of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement. She is also co-chair of the Police Advisory Task Force, which submitted recommendations to the ACC Government Operations Committee, which missed a June 30th deadline to present its recommendation the Mayor and Commission.

We made our recommendations in February or March, and it's been months.

“We made our recommendations in February or March, and it’s been months,” according to Johnson.  “And it’s very frustrating if you go back and you watch these videos, it feels very dismissive and biased in how some of the conversation is being handled and how they are approaching the recommendations that the Task Force has made.”

Johnson also submitted several demands in her Open Letter to the committee. They include making up two missed meetings of the GOC, amending the budget to provide funding for the oversight committee, allowing co-chairs of the task force to attend meetings, and sending recommendations to the Mayor and Commission by the end of September.

“It seems like they’re starting over from scratch instead of building off the recommendations that we have. It doesn’t seem like everyone has done their homework and their research.”

We reached out to GOC chair Commissioner Mike Hamby for a comment regarding Johnson’s concerns, however he has not yet responded.
