Athens-Clarke County Commissioners met for three hours on Tuesday, hearing from a handful of people on the county’s proposed budget. Four ACC residents spoke out on homelessness, a proposal to raise wages for the county’s lowest-paid workers to $15 an hour, and the need for participatory budgeting.

Commissioners also unanimously approved a $146,000 cash infusion for the county’s Elections Office to cover expenses from the 2020 election. Also approved without opposition was the list of roads due for repaving and maintenance.

The Commission also briefly discussed the Classic Center Arena project, and voted to advance the project to its next phase. Final renderings of how the arena is expected to look could be in front of Commissioners for a vote as soon as August.

Commissioners also unanimously approved just over $50,000 to reimburse Advantage Behavioral Health for mental health services, while postponing a vote on a related plan to establish a non-profit capacity building pilot program.

Commissioners meet again for a work session on June 8. They are expected to approve next year’s budget at a special session on June 15.
