ACC Commissioner Allison Wright on Taxpayer's Bill of Rights Meetings

ACC Government

Mayor Kelly Girtz has submitted his Fiscal Year 2021 budget to Athens-Clarke Commissioners. The measure, with a $140 million general fund, proposes a cut in the millage rate, but as District 4 Commissioner Allison Wright explains, it’s a bit complicated.

“It’s very confusing, “according to Wright. “What has happened is the property assessments have gone up, but the state has us term that in a millage rate increase, so it goes from a property value increase but the Bill of Rights says it in millage rate.”

The ACC government is holding a Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights series public hearings in the coming weeks. The first of those meetings is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 at 5:30. Wright says the meetings provide valuable information.

“We are not increasing the millage rate, as a matter of fact, the mayor has a decrease in the millage rate in his summary on the first page of the budget that’s now online.”

Additional meetings are scheduled for June 2 at 6 pm, and June 16 at 6pm. That meeting will be followed by a Special Called meeting of the Mayor and Commission to adopt the budget. All meetings will be held remotely. For physical locations of public comments, visit, www.accgov.com/clerkofcommission.
