The removal of the Confederate monument in downtown Athens Monday night is generating mostly positive reaction from residents and elected leaders. District 7 Commissioner Russell Edwards says that in addition to removing the monument - seen as controversial and offensive to many, there is a significant safety benefit.
“Overall I think it’s been a positive reaction recognizing that the relocation of the monument coincides with a great pedestrian improvement right there on Broad Street that is going to increase safety downtown, so, I think the relocation of that monument was an appropriate step,” Edwards said.
The removal allows Athens Clarke County to expand the crosswalk - considered one of the busiest in the city. The newly-revamped crosswalk is expected to accomodate 200 to 300 more people once completed.
